Baseball team begins new season on new field

The Crusader baseball team kicked off its season at the Houston Christian Tournament and finished with two wins and three losses. On Thursday,
February 26, Jesuit played a very exciting game against Houston Christian
but lost 0-1 in its season opener.

They followed the loss with a 10-0 victory against St.John’s.

Jesuit ended the tournament in another thriller in which Senior Matt Hudec
pitched seven innings without allowing a run against Dallas Jesuit. Jesuit
couldn’t earn a run in the extra inning and lost 0-1.

The first home game of the season will take place on March 2nd when Lamar
High School visits Jesuit to play on the brand new field.

When asked about the new baseball field, senior Brett Lindeman responded,
“It’s sweet! We now have an all-dirt infield and have lights built surrounding the
field. We can finally play and schedule night games. It will definitely be an
awesome experience to play on the new field.”

The bases also got shifted around. Where the first base used to be last year is now the position of the home plate. The new positioning also allows a good view from the football stadium. When the baseball bleachers get crowded, audiences can stand on the football bleachers and still get an excellent view of the field.

In addition to playing on a new field, Jesuit baseball will also be playing its first season in the UIL. Three very strong district teams include Cinco Ranch, Katy, and Katy Taylor.

Brett said, “I think we have a very good chance to play well and even win district.
We have a very deep team that includes a large number of seniors. In addition, we performed well in our first tournament and in our scrimmages against Bellaire and Woodlands. We were able to match up well against the Cardinals, and I think that gave our players confidence because we realize we can compete against a very talented team such as Bellaire.”

To make the playoffs, Jesuit will need to finish in the top three teams. A total of fourteen district games (two against each of the seven district teams) will be played, and the first game will take place on March 9th when Katy visits Jesuit for a district battle.

The varsity baseball team will feature very strong pitching this season. The starting rotation will have three seniors, including Matthew Hudec, Christian Loeffler, and Nick Cobler, and junior Robert Lindeman. On the offensive end, some of Jesuit’s strong hitters include Evan Dubay, Justin Turner, Chris Petty, and Brett Lindeman.
