In poll, Jesuit seniors vault past stereotypes

By Casey Doherty
Magis staff writer

So, who's the smartest? Recently a poll was conducted amongst 18 Jesuit seniors who did not participate in a sport this year and one faculty member asked them to rank Jesuit's twelve sports from highest to lowest GPAs. The students were largely accurate, correctly picking Cross Country and Swimming as #1 and #2, while also picking Wrestling Basketball and Football as the last three. Those three were indeed the last three, but in reverse order. The reason that students picked Cross Country was summed up in one word: Felipe. Felipe as in Felipe Serrano, as in super genius of the world. Cross Country's academic excellence, thanks in large part to Magis, is well known throughout the Jesuit community, so people ignored the tempting conclusion that you had to be dumb to run around in circles all day for fun. In large part, people picked because of the people they knew on the teams, but at least one Jesuit student fessed up to caving into stereotypes. Andras Konya picked football last because, “I couldn't ignore the anti-jock section of my brain.” Andras was obviously not the only one to pick football last; the general consensus among Strake students was that football was the dumbest. Football semi-vindicated itself by finishing third to last in front of Basketball and Wrestling. Wrestling, though they won state, maybe should have spent some more of those countless hours practicing practicing counting amongst other things. Students ranked Tennis three spots to high, perhaps because of the country club appeal, or they agreed with Kyle Armand, who ranked tennis #1 because he thought of the face of Jesuit tennis, Christopher J. Mackey who has quite the GPA. Mackey also has teammates though, whose GPAs turned out to be not as impressive. All in all though, whether basing their rankings on stereotypes or scientific evaluation the Jesuit seniors were impressive in their picks, never misplacing a sport by more than three spots.
