New swim coach

New coach brings tougher workout regimen
to swim team

The SJ swimming team started off their season with an additional coach: Coach Marvin.

Coach Marvin is one of the many new faculty Strake hired this year.
His academic duties include Freshman Biology 1 and sophomore
Chemistry 1.

Coach Marvin's main duty as a coach are the daily workouts
for SJ swimmers.

Senior Ryan Kemnitz said, “Coach Horn is the head coach, and he is the
one who arranges and schedules our meets. Coach Marvin is our workout
and conditioning coach.”

This may be Coach Marvin's first season coaching the swim team, but he definitely knows his stuff.

Coach Marvin has been tough on swimmers' workouts in our inaugural
season to the UIL.

During the weekdays practice starts early at 5:45 and last until 7:30. Swimmers now have to wake up exceptionally early to arrive on time for Coach Marvin's daily session.

Joey Gochnour said, “The workouts this season are A LOT more intense
than last year's.”

Chris Clark added, “Coach Marvin is extremely disciplined. This is a
big asset to our team because public schools in our district have
amazing programs and we need to work hard and be disciplined in
order to compete against these guys.”

The intensity of swimming practices peaked during the winter when swimmers had two practices a day for a total of four hours. They swam
about 5000 to 7000 meters.

The workouts have eased up a little after the break because the
swimmers are now tapering. Tapering is a technique that helps swimmers build their muscles. There are less workouts but every workout is now
faster and more intense.

This year's squad consists of five seniors including Ryan Kemnitz, Joey Gochnour, Chris Clark, Carlos Lopez-Roman, and Kevein Wooten.
Kemnitz believe Coach Marvin may be a factor in why many of the
seniors quit this year.

“I think a lot of them knew Jesuit's swim program is going to be tough this year. Many of them did not take swimming seriously and didn't want to
work hard during their senior year,” said Ryan Kemnitz.

An anonymous swimmer confirmed that “more work” was the main reason
he quit.

The UIL district meet will take place on January 31st.

Ryan said, “Basically we have been preparing this whole season for this one meet. This meet will determine whether we can reach regionals and eventually to state.”

Joey added “I think we can definitely do well in the district meet. Coach Marvin improved the team this season a lot more than we have ever done before.”
