An Interview with Mike Lemming

Strake Jesuit is a great school that is renown for turning young men into great role models, as well as leaders. In the senior class of 2005, many young men fit the criteria above.
However, there is one that stands out in most people’s minds. Mike Lemming exemplifies all of the characteristics of Strake Jesuit’s “The Grad at Grad”. During this past year Mike was nominated as a finalist for the George H.W. Bush Kiwanis sports hero award, elected to be one of four team captains for the Jesuit football team, as well as being elected as the senior class president.
This fall, Mike was nominated as a finalist for the George H.W. Bush Kiwanis sports hero award that offered a $5,000 scholarship to the winner and $2,500 dollar scholarships to the two runner ups. Only three student athletes were nominated to be finalists in the entire city of Houston, Mike being one of them.
Each year, this award is given to a student who exemplifies good character, participates in community service, maintains a respectable GPA, and plays football. Mike won the runner up position in the sports hero award. He received a $2,500 scholarship that can be used towards college.
Each year at the start of the football season the varsity football team is asked to vote for a few members of the team that exemplify great character and leadership on and off the field. The players who are nominated will become the team captains. Mike was elected to be one of the captains.
“He’s a great leader and a great friend. I really respect him and look up to him,” says starting defensive end Ryan Keel. Ryan Keel also wanted to add that Mike is “more throwed than a football on super bowl Sunday”. Mike, along with Anthony Hynes, Justin Moore, and Norbie Juist are the four captains for the 2004 varsity football team. This is a critical year for Strake’s football team as it will be our first year competing in the UIL.
With this challenge comes the need for great leadership from the upper classmen. Mike fits this role perfectly. “He’s a big leader in the offense. He leads by example,” says starting quarterback Tim Bandy. Mike’s football ability has also caught the eye of college recruiters. Over the past year West Point, the Naval Academy, and Lehigh University have all recruited Mike to play football. Right now Mike says that his number one choice is West Point.
Mike is not just a leader on the football field. Mike is also a leader during everyday life at Jesuit. During his sophomore and junior years at Jesuit, Mike participated in the freshman retreat, and last spring, he was elected as the senior class president.
“I see Mike every day helping those who need guidance or help, not only in football but also in the halls, no matter what class they're in or whether he is friends with them or not,” says Bryan Allgeier.
Mike Lemming is a great leader on and off the field, and provides a good example of how to be a “man for others”.
